James Howe’s novel The Misfits tells about a group of adolescents who find unity in their inability to fit in with their peers. After reading a passage from Howe’s novel, I reflected on the relationships in my life and what draws me to the people I surround myself with. I included words such as “loving” and “fun” because these adjectives describe the core of my relationships. I surround myself with people who are supportive and, most of all, make me feel good. My friends and family surround me in all of my pictures because they are the support that I build my foundation on. In the novel The Misfits, “Fluff” surrounds himself with people who are misfits because “they’re just who they are instead of ‘fits’, who are like everybody else.” I surround myself with people who are comfortable with their individuality so I know that I will be supported in all of my decisions, whether or not my choice is the popular one. I used the Swedish proverb “shared joy is a double joy; shared sorrow is half a sorrow” because, like “Fluff”, I choose to share my life with people who are not only willing share my good times but also will be there to share my bad times too.

James Howe’s novel, The Misfits, highlights the dramatic high school years revolving around four “misfits”. After reading an excerpt from The Misfits discussing relationships holding “the misfits” together I myself realized the relationships that I have in my own life that hold me up. Relationships are what make living life possible and make each of us who we are as an individual. Doing this project opened my eyes more so to the various relationship types I have in my own life, and I realized just how much they have come to make me who I am. Best friends or parents, boyfriends or sisters, relationships are everywhere, between everyone, all keeping us all up on our feet and well.
